Spinel Inert Matrix Fuel Testing at the Hfr Petten
نویسنده
چکیده
Magnesium aluminate spinel is one of the most investigated inert matrix materials, due to its good physico-chemical stability, resistance against neutron irradiation, and its thermal conductivity comparable with conventional UO2 fuel. At the HFR in Petten various combinations of actinides and spinel have been tested within the EFTTRA programme, with the object to study the transmutation of americium. To study the incineration of plutonium in spinel in a once through mode, the OTTO irradiation was started, which is still being irradiated at the HFR. From the various irradiation tests it appears that MgAl2O4 spinel shows a chemical instability at high temperatures and a large volumetric swelling under the influence of high-energy fission products. These disadvantageous properties put severe restrictions on the use of spinel for the partitioning and transmutation of spent fuel.

Fertile Free Fuels for Plutonium and Minor Actinides Burning in LWRs
The feasibility of using various uranium-free fuels for plutonium incineration in present light water reactors is investigated. Two major categories of inert matrix fuels are studied: composite ceramic fuel particles dispersed in another ceramic matrix (CERCER) and ceramic fuel particles dispersed into a metallic matrix (CERMET). In the category of CERCER, the current world wide research effort...
متن کاملElectrophoretic deposition of MnCr2O4 coating for solid oxide fuel cell metallic interconnects
In the present study, Mn - Cr spinel powder was synthesized through a solid state reaction. In the next step, the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method was used to apply the MnCr2O4 spinel, as an oxidation-resistant layer, on SUS 430 stainless steel in a potential of 300 V/cm. The coated and uncoated samples were then pre-sintered in air at 900 °C for 3 h followed by cyclic oxidation at 800 °...
متن کاملCharacterization of radiation damage in inert matrices for transmutation of nuclear waste
The radiation damage produced by energetic heavy ions in several ceramic oxides was characterized by different methods: thermoluminescence, optical absorption, fluorescence and electron paramagnetic resonance. Following ion irradiation, the thermoluminescence intensity of all the samples is shown to decrease. This can be related to the observed rise of the optical absorption in the whole wavele...
متن کاملDesign of a rotating facility for extracorporal treatment of an explanted liver with disseminated metastases by boron neutron capture therapy with an epithermal neutron beam.
In 2001, at the TRIGA reactor of the University of Pavia (Italy), a patient suffering from diffuse liver metastases from an adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid was successfully treated by boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). The procedure involved boron infusion prior to hepatectomy, irradiation of the explanted liver at the thermal column of the reactor, and subsequent reimplantation. A complete re...
